A Treatise of Existence

"take this down. dont boot shit."
The purpose of this blog is to give people access to out of print material. Yes, there are countless other blogs doing the same thing, but whereas most seem to just post files in any random bitrate from awful sounding USB turntables or tape decks connected via the line-in port on internal soundcards, I do my best to provide high quality rips to the best of my ability. I go through a lengthy cleaning process of all records before ripping them, and go through equally* lengthy post-processing to remove any stray ticks/pops without harming the sound quality. All CD rips are done via EAC with a 100% log, and then transcoded to V0 .mp3 (with FLAC available upon request).

Now, read the bold part of the first sentence again, if you will. Out of print. When a record is no longer in print that means the artist and label have sold all of their copies. Sometimes a record is repressed, sometimes it isn't. Represses eventually go out of print, perhaps being repressed yet again, most often not. At some point down the line the record becomes no longer available to the general public, and that is where torrent sites and blogs such as this benefit people (even if sometimes you're only getting a 128kbps transcoded .mp3).

The italic part of that paragraph: sold all of their copies. When all copies of a release have been sold, all potential money the artist and label can make off a record has been made. Therefore, no party involved in the creation of the record is losing money via these downloads.

While unfortunately I can't say the same for most blogs out there, the bold and italic phrases are my guidelines when posting things for download here.

Is the record out of print? Yes.
Am I taking any money away from the label or artist? No.
Why not? Because the record is out of print.

Is the record out of print? No.
Do I post it? No.
Why not? Because the record is in print and I would be taking away potential sales that benefit the artist and label.

If a record is indeed out of print but you are the artist or label who released it and want the link taken down for whatever reason (I wont ask you to clarify), I will quickly and happily do so as long as you state who you are. That being said, if you are someone who is simply against free downloading as a whole, regardless if no one except eBay profit-seekers and other record-flipper types are the ones benefiting from "sales", I will not remove the link.

There are some artists I've posted releases of here that I know are not fond of illegal downloading of their in print material. I agree with them 100%. In print material should not be leaked/shared for free unless the band gives the okay. I have talked to some of these people and let them know what I am doing with this blog and they have either given me a blatant "Yes, do it!" or have simply not taken up any issue.

So, with that being said, whichever anonymous person asked me to remove the download of AMPS FOR CHRIST - Every Eleven Seconds CD (which I promptly did), I'll have you know I am going to be reposting it shortly (probably right after I post this). Why? Because I asked Henry Barnes (aka AMPS FOR CHRIST) if it was he who asked it to be taken down, and this is what he had to say:
"Not me !!!! I like you posting AFC!!! Keep it up !! Cheers Henry"
So, then, unless you are the person behind 5 Rue Christine (a label which I thought was now defunct), I don't really see what right or obligation you have in telling me to remove something that wasn't yours (or mine) in the first place, especially when the artist has given me explicit permission. If you were somehow involved with the album and it turns out I'm just being an ass here, again, let me know who you are and I will remove it.

I am not a bootlegger out to make a profit. I am not Thomas Lenz**. I'm not publicly posting in print releases that may be taking away much needed sales from artists and labels. I am providing an archive of material that people often can't find through the normal channels for less than an arm and a leg (if at all), trying to put a bit of background information on the releases, as well as hopefully turning people on to new artists. Speaking from experience, downloading leads to sales. There have been countless occasions where someone has sent me a rip of a record or I downloaded it myself, having never really heard the band before, fallen in love with the record, and then sought it out and bought it. I know many people that do this. People legitimately into the music and punk/hardcore culture will buy the record (it also helps having the consumer/materialist culture that we do), anyone who doesn't isn't in it for the right reasons anyways, and is someone like that not buying your record really a great loss?

Just remember, everything here is out of print and no one is losing money.

Also remember to report any dead links, and I hope we can all continue to enjoy these releases.

*I no longer have my VPI HW16.5 cleaning machine. All records are cleaned with a dry brush. In the rare case a record is actually quite dirty, a solution of alcohol and distilled water is used with a cotton swab.

**Eric Wood may suggest otherwise, for reasons completely unrelated to this blog.

Bastard Noise & Christian Renou - Brainstorming (2003)

Artist(s): Bastard Noise & Christian Renou
Title: Brainstorming
Format: CD
Year: 2003
Label/Catalog: Desolation House DH-0300

Wood and Wiese at it again creating the miraculous alien landscapes BASTARD NOISE is known for, while Renou's (BRUME) prominence dips in and out nicely. The first BASTARD NOISE full length I ever heard and the first of two Brainstorming collaborations. Renou also appears on a collaboration track as part of Our Earth's Blood IV 5CD.

No artwork scans in this one. If you really in need I might include them in the future.

Part of my nightly auto-CD upload series to bulk up the site, which will continue every day at 12:01AM until my collection of out of print CDs runs dry. It's looking like we'll be good to go for the next two months. Vinyl rips will still happen as I do them and be posted at any time of day whenver they're ready.

Bastard Noise - Ancient and Unknown Brutality (2008)

Artist(s): Bastard Noise
Title: Ancient and Unknown Brutality
Format: CD
Year: 2008
Label/Catalog: Triage Industries M.Abass-04 / Amid The Waves amid-01

This release compiles rare and unreleased BASTARD NOISE material spanning 1994-1999 in 15 tracks. The material is mostly from the mid-90s and collects tracks from their splits with NATION OF HATE, PERSONASNONGRATAS, collaborations with BIZARRE UPROAR and KRACHGAU (two of which were previously unreleased), compilation tracks from Freak Animal #10 zine + 7" and Release Your Mind: Volume Two 3CD, and 5 completely unreleased tracks. My favourites here are the BIZARRE UPROAR and KRACHGAU collborations, "Sewer Beings - Madness Below" & "Disneyland Values", but all are of course worthy.

Bonus Boys - Everytime I See A Car Like Yours Go By b/w Wasting Our Time (1979)

Artist(s): Bonus Boys
Title: Everytime I See A Car Like Yours Go By b/w Wasting Our Time
Format: 7"
Year: 1979
Label/Catalog: Tsunami Music 3538

Didn't like it upon first listen. Now one of my favourite early Vancouver punk/new wave 7"s that I've heard. The lyrics are simple but the hooks and arrangements of the songs are what make this good. A lot of similarities to NO FUN in some respects and one of those bands all but forgotten because they weren't with the "in" crowd in the Vancouver punk scene. They beat out THE MODERNETTES at a battle of the bands and won studio time for the next single, "I Want To Work In A Bank" b/w "Confusing Ourselves". A third single was recorded but remained unreleased when they disbanded in 1981. Kim Clarke, the vocals, guitar, and brains behind the band and who went on with two other BONUS BOYS to form the post-punk band MOCCASIN TELEGRAPH, passed away in January of 2011.

The aborted "So Sad" b/w "Head For The Hills" 7", along with the other two singles can be heard at http://www.myspace.com/bonusboys, which I assume is an unofficial page.

Agathocles / Armatura - Split (2007)

Artist(s): Agathocles / Armatura
Title: Split
Format: CD
Year: 2007
Label/Catalog: Bloodspit SPIT 008

Not much to say here. If you're looking for it then you already know what it is. 23 songs in 18 some-odd minutes. Got this CD as a freebie, ripped it years ago and promptly got rid of it.

Thursday 23 February 2012

Back in the saddle.

As of 02/22/12 all 12" records are cleaned using the new process (see here for info).

For the next while there will also be an auto-upload at 12:01AM every night (morning) for the next several weeks. These uploads will be from out of print CDs that I've ripped previously and will be used to keep the site active and bulk it up when I'm not ripping records. I have enough CDs ripped that this should last approximately two months. First one is coming tonight. Vinyl rips will still be done and posted whenever they are ready, no exact schedule.

Thanks for checking out the rips, I hope you've been enjoying them. Please remember to report any dead links!

Bastard Noise & Outermost - Cauldron of Fire (2000)

Artist(s): Bastard Noise & Outermost
Title: Cauldron of Fire
Format: 7"
Year: 2000
Label/Catalog: DP DSPR 800

Some great stuff from John Wiese-era BASTARD NOISE. This is Eric Wood's personal favourite BN release, and the reason for it is clearly heard. THE BASTARD NOISE is in top form here and having OUTERMOST on board makes this a phenomenal release.

Au Pairs - Inconvenience b/w Pretty Boys (1981)

Artist(s): Au Pairs
Title: Inconvenience b/w Pretty Boys
Format: 12"
Year: 1981
Label/Catalog: Human HUM 8

UK female-fronted post-punk/new wave. 12" single featuring two tracks that didn't appear on either of their albums, plus a remix of "Headache for Michelle", from Playing With A Different Sex, simply titled "Headache".

I previously ripped this record about a year and a half ago on my old setup. New rip boasts less surface noise and a cleaner sound. Aside from a slight fub around the 4:04 mark of "Headache", everything else should be good.

Record Envelope

UPDATE 02/28/12: Record Envelope lives, and my scan of the Festival Records sleeve can be seen here.

Record Envelope, "the little library of factory sleeves" is "A reference for vinyl geeks and graphic artists."

It's essentially just what it sounds like. Pictures of original company 7" sleeves. Nice to look at. Even contributions from people a stone's throw away from me.

At any rate, I submitted my company sleeves but seeing as the site hasn't been updated since mid-2011, it may have become inactive. Which is why I'll post my scans here and I'll update this post if I ever see my pictures on RE.

Please Wait 60 Seconds. 59, 58, 57...

Sorry for the lack of posts lately. Just waiting on some cleaning supplies to come in, revising my process a bit to get improved results (less ticks/pops and less surface noise).

My cleaning regimen will go from a two-step process to a four-, possibly five-, step process. Details will be noted on the Ripping Process page once everything arrives and has been put to use.

When I return you can expect some uploads from BASTARD NOISE, BORN AGAINST, [E?], MAN IS THE BASTARD, TIM RAY, RUNNING FOR COVER, SCALP-LOCK, SHANK, UJ3RK5, and I might even post some major(ish) label stuff that I normally haven't taken a stab at for this blog yet in the likes of BILL PLUMMER AND THE COSMIC BROTHERHOOD (eastern-space-jazz-fusion).

While we wait, here's a couple related links:
